WHAT EXACTLY IS MOLD AND WHERE CAN IT APPEAR IN MY HOME?

Molds are microscopic fungi, which, unlike plants, are unable to produce their own food from sunlight and air.  They are composed of filament clusters, and utilize plant and animal matter to survive.  Molds are able to decompose these materials for their nourishment.  Many molds, including those found in your home, are able to release spores into the air, which then settle on other organic matter and grow into new mold clusters.  Airborne mold spores are more prevalent than pollen grains, and when inhaled can cause allergic reactions.

Plenum...the darkest, dankest, dirtiest places in your entire system. Pictured is a dirty supply plenum with the top and all ducts removed. Note how dirt and microbial growth tend to first accumulate in the corners and then spread outward.

Molds can be found in a number of environments, including many found in your home.  Their growth is encouraged by warmth and high humidity, and are found in highest levels in the more humid months.  Although some molds are produced outside of your home, many are produced in the home, especially in areas of high humidity such as showers and basements.

IS THERE A DANGER IN HOUSE DUST OR IS IT JUST A NUISANCE?

Although there are many components in house dust to which people may be allergic, the most important allergen is the dust mite. This is a microscopic, insect-like creature, which is found in homes. Dust mites live primarily in mattresses, carpets, and upholstered furniture, and thrive in humid and warm conditions.

Waste products produced by these mites are the main substanceof house dust to which allergic people react. Dust mites live in any environment in your home that provides warmth, humidity, and food for their growth.  Although it is impossible to totally eliminate dust mites from your home, you can do the things necessary to control their growth. This includes keeping your air ducts cleaned, a great source of the nutrients and humidity dust mites need to grow.

No matter how old your home is, if your air ducts have never been cleaned, there is a good chance that you can have build-up similar to the air duct pictured on the left. The high levels of humidity in the Gulf Coast region, along with the vast amount of dirt and debris in our air, can eventually cause your air ducts to become clogged with dirt, dust and mold.

Call CLEAN AIR SOLUTIONS and let us help you get your ducts back to their original look and improve your indoor air quality.
