Air-Handling Unit - The
cabinet for a central furnace, air conditioner, or heat pump, and blower motor
assembly. Primary problem entails dirt and dust accumulation, particularly on
the blower motor.
Air Supply Ductwork - The ductwork that carries air
from the air handler to the rooms of the house. There is usually at least one
supply duct for each room and several for larger rooms. Problems can range from
heavy dirt accumulation to improperly sealed connections. For sheet metal ductwork,
we can also see problems with "sweating" if improperly insulated. (see

Return Plenum - The passageway that carries air from
the building back to the air handler. Most homes have only one or two return ducts
that originate in a central area of the house and feed the return plenum. In commercial
buildings, the amount can vary. Good spot to find heavy dirt accumulation. If
constructed of fiberboard, can also harbor high mold. ( see image)

Supply Plenum - Box made of duct board, metal,
drywall, or wood that distribute air to individual ducts or supply registers.
Can sometimes find heavy mold accumulation due to high humidity output from evaporator
coil. (see image)
Blower Motor Assembly - Part of the air-handling
unit responsible for air flow in the system. Good spot to find heavy dust accumulation,
which decreases the efficiency of the unit. (see

Evaporator Coil - Part of the air-handling unit where
cooling occurs. Air blown by the blower motor flows over the coils where liquid
refrigerant - under low pressure - absorbs heat from the air. Also responsible
for the dehumidification of the air flowing through the system. Humidity removed
from the air is taken out through the drain pan/drain line assembly. Good spot
for mold, dirt, and debris. (see image)
